Due to the weather, our hike in the Black Forest was postponed. Initially, we wanted to do the schnapps hike Oberkirch Brennersteig, which is a 9-mile hike taking 4-5 hours to complete. The trail takes travelers past several family-run distilleries, which put out a few well-placed bottles of schnapps in cool water basins for any passerby to try. We needed to complete a morning hike, and likely no distilleries or schnapps would be available. Also, we didn't need to get hammered at 8 in the morning. With a quick pivot, we found another hike that promised beautiful waterfalls and monastery ruins. The beginning of the hike is loaded with steep staircases following the river with many waterfalls to enjoy along the way. The rock faces were covered in dripping moss and logs providing a variety of mushrooms.

A third of the way through the hike, we come across a mountainside with adorable little goats. They seemed disinterested in us as we passed by, taking pictures and videos of them. Venturing into the little village we took the opportunity to use the WC and Caitlin my tour guide passed on her knowledge of the monks from this monastery. This video can be found at the bottom of the post.

As we continued on, it slowly started to mist on us, but this was welcomed compared to the downpour that was the day before. During this hike, I got a notification on my cell phone that we had entered France, which was a pleasant surprise as we didn’t intend to accidentally walk into this country.

Out of my entire trip to Germany, this was one of my favorite places to go. I could plan a trip solely around the Black Forest, exploring different hikes and small towns.
