Köln - Day 9
Instead of spending the whole day in Köln, we decided to mix things up and take a little side trip to Aachen. The main goal? To stand in three countries at once—Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands! There’s something so fun about being able to hop between borders in just a few steps. After taking the obligatory “three countries” photos, we found a nearby spot to grab a beer and a light lunch. I went for a cheese toasty (simple but so good), and we also tried what seemed to be the German take on pigs in a blanket.
I just had to share a photo of the cutest little Amazon delivery vehicle we spotted. Isn’t it adorable? While wandering around, we also stopped for some Spaghetti Eis because, honestly, it’s one of those treats you have to get while in Germany. You just can’t find it back home in the States.
Of course, no trip to Köln would be complete without visiting the iconic Kölner Dom. It was Caitlin’s first time there, so we took our time exploring. She lit a candle for her father, which was such a touching moment. We also got to see the Shrine of the Three Kings and just take in the beauty of this incredible cathedral—it never fails to leave me in awe.
We wrapped up the evening with a hearty bowl of Gulasch—and get this, it was literally the only thing on the menu! When we looked at the drink menu, we noticed beer was cheaper than water. Only in Germany, right?
