Hamburg - Day 2

On day two, my new friend Oualid joined me for the day’s adventures. We started at Hamburg Hauptbahnhof, grabbing a warm cheese pretzel and a cup of coffee before heading out to Parkfriedhof Ohlsdorf. If you love exploring unique cemeteries, this place is an absolute must-see. As the largest rural cemetery in the world, it spans over 400 hectares, seamlessly blending lush parkland with historic graves, ornate mausoleums, and striking sculptures. Wandering its winding paths, past serene gardens and reflective ponds, feels like stepping into a living work of art. But Ohlsdorf is more than just a cemetery—it’s a cultural landmark, offering a glimpse into Hamburg’s history, architecture, and artistry, all wrapped in a surprisingly peaceful setting.

Afterwards, we headed to the Reeperbahn and St. Pauli, taking a stroll through Hamburg’s famous—and infamous—red-light district. The streets were alive with energy, filled with an eclectic mix of food stalls, quirky shops, lively bars, strip clubs, and as the day progressed, live music. It was a fascinating and colorful scene, a side of the city that’s as vibrant as it is unique.

What felt like a day of endless walking, we made our way to Planten un Blomen Park. Although I had come to see the Japanese Garden, I ended up falling in love with the entire park—a peaceful oasis filled with vibrant flower beds, tranquil ponds, and winding paths.

After a short nap back at the hostel, Oualid and I headed out for some evening fun. We enjoyed a few drinks and shared a delicious pizza in Bergedorf.
